Event in Memory of Benjamin “Ben” Ferencz
On 10 April 2024, the International Nuremberg Principles Academy is organising the workshop titled “The Contribution of Ben Ferencz to Contemporary International Criminal Law: An Advocate for Accountability and Justice”. This will take place at the east building of the Nuremberg Palace of Justice on 10 April 2024, from 12 pm to 4 pm. Professor John Q. Barrett, Professor Gregory S. Gordon and Mrs Anja Listmann will give an overview of Ben Ferencz’s life and work. Special emphasis will be placed on his involvement in the Einsatzgruppen case at Nuremberg, his years of peace advocacy and his enthusiasm for the International Criminal Court at The Hague.
In a lively and engaging conversation between the speakers and the participants, the workshop will examine Ben Ferencz’s conception of meaningful justice: prosecution of perpetrators, compensation for victims of atrocities and prevention of international crimes. The free-flowing dialogue will therefore assess such triangle of an effective international system of justice, paying also attention to the ingredients that, from the perspective of Ben Ferencz, are the true foundation of every civilised society: codification, court and enforcement. The effectiveness of these pillars will be discussed in the light of the current challenges in the field of international criminal justice.
The event is free of charge and open to the public but with limited availability of space.
